Bet on Divination
A game where you bet with your life on the line... literally.
Project Details / Background
"Bet on Divination" is a fun spin on the game of blackjack where a player competes against a dealer (and sometimes other players) in order to get as close as you can to 21. You go over 21, then you "bust," or lose the round Otherwise, you must see if your hand can get as close to a dealer. There are many resources to learn blackjack, so I'll skim out on the basic rules of the game. The fun spin is that the game is themed on divinity. I borrow some symbolism and concepts from tarot cards, which not only adds more features to the game, but also adds layers of meaning to how the game of blackjack is essentially a game where you try to read the future (of course, in a much smaller scale). Hence, tarot cards provide the player with abilities to have an edge over the dealer. Ultimately, it is the goal of the player to gain enough years (the primary betting source in the game) to be immortal.
Bet on Divination was the final project of ICS 485, Game Development at the University of Hawaii. It was created in Godot, where the assets were all freely available under copyright law. I've uploaded the game on itch.io, the famous game platform, so everyone with WebGL can play it (it may not work depending on your browser, most do work though). I have found that the process to make the game was incredibly rewarding and fun. I was forced to learn audacity (for editing audio), just enough GIMP to not lose my sanity, and GD script in order to actually code the behavior and mechanics that you see in the game.
Despite how I have added tarot cards to the name, I will say that many people have struggled because of how random it can be. Personally, I have been stuck for well over an hour losing repeatedly. Don't gamble, kids.
